Thomas Jay Peckish II on Deadlines

Deadlines, unfortunately, are effective catalysts for converting potential energy into kinetic energy, albeit inefficiently.

If I may be so bold, perhaps a more economical way to express this idea would be:

Deadline--an effective yet inefficient catalyst for converting potential energy into kinetic energy.

Cordially,

PS: I went deadline mining. See below.

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.
-- Douglas Adams

A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.
--Harvey Mackay

A perfect method for adding drama to life is to wait until the deadline looms large.
--Alyce P. Cornyn Selby

Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.
--Frank Zappa

One forges one's style on the terrible anvil of daily deadlines.
--Emile Zola

A deadline is negative inspiration. Still, it's better than no inspiration at all.

Our mystery correspondent may not have known it, but this sort of two-phase exercise, consisting of first #1) posting a notion one might have had in the shower, or somesuch, and #2) heading out to the search engines to determine just how hackneyed the notion actually is, has been intended to be one of the staples of Catfish in the Memepool... Not "hackneyed," not at all. Nothing vulgar, trite or commonplace about it. But Mr. Peckish's original notion, an epigram about deadlines, intriqued me. So, to the quotation book which, of course, is these days useful only to prop up the short leg of a table, its contents having long since mutated onto the web in magnificently indexed arrays. And once there, I find quotes from Zola to Zappa! It's a miracle. Posted by: patrick owens on December 6, 2004 02:09 PM
